Night Must
Fall,
by Emlyn Williams, has all the makings of one of those wonderful, old fashioned British murder mysteries. Set in 1935 in a cottage in Essex, this is not the stereotypical whodunit you might expect. In fact, to label it as a murder mystery is somewhat misleading. It could more accurately be placed in the genre of psychological thriller, for it's perfectly obvious from the beginning just who the murderer in question is and that he will murder again and who the victim will be.
In the remote English countryside, hypocondriacal Mrs. Bramson resides with her niece, Olivia Grayne. When a missing woman turns up murdered Olivia suspects her aunt's new companion, Danny, who has charmed his way into the cantankerous old woman's good graces. Tension mounts as police close in and Olivia finds herself attracted to the man she thinks is a murderer.
