Railroads have played a big part in Chicago's development and history.  Since the 1850's, they had represented the "leading edge" of technology.  By the 1930's, this was subtlety changing.  The trucking and automobile industries were growing, but few would have dreamed that they would have the dramatic effect on railroads that would soon follow.  Once the government started to subsidize highways and roads in a major way, the course of transportation history in America was dramatically changed.  During the "Century of Progress," however, railroads were still "king.  Here are some photos of railroad displays:
