Bill Breitsprecher's Guitar Music - 2010

Welcome! Its a pleasure and an honor to be serving up my guitar podcast for a 4th season - Thanks for your support! This project has evolved from an audio presentations (MP3 files ) of my solo finger-style guitar arrangements, to music videos, and this year, I'll emphasize my work featuring full bands. I still strive to create and share music that reflect simpler times, when music was recorded with minimal edits, effects, and digital processing. Yes - these are digital recordings, but they are played on traditional-style guitars without any enhancements or digital tricks. Modern technology is wonderful and the music of today is great. I want to share music played and recorded the way I remember it from my youth and as it was taught to me. These videos are formatted for iPod/Zune videos (mpeg4). If you want to see the online streaming version (.flv), please check out MY GUITAR MUSIC link by clicking on the guitar icon on the right or visit me at BreitLinks (www.breitlinks.com).

VIDEO/MP4: Straight No Chaser, Arranged and performed by by Bill Breitsprecher and the Digital Blues Band, iPod/Zune)

Here's a Thelonious Monk tune - one of my favorites. It's an upbeat swing-blues. The version I play in this video has a bit of a rock feel in the rhythm section, brought to you by the Digital Blues Band. This is a fun piece to play because the melody plays through some II-V changes while the backup band is playing the chords straight. (March 12, 2010).

VIDEO/MP4: Takin' Name (Traditional African American Spiritual - vocals by Bill Breitsprecher, iPod/Zune)

In honor of African American History Month, I have recorded this old-time spiritual. It goes back to at least the 1890s and is probably much older. It is performed under different names, "The Angel of Death," "There's a Man Goin' Round", "There's a Man", and just plain "Takin' Names (title as I learned it). Various people have recorded it over the years, including Josh White, though many know it from a Peter, Paul, and Mary release. It's a haunting melody with chords that absolutely ring with dark overtones on a guitar. (February 9, 2010).

VIDEO/MP4: Late Freight Blues/Spoken Word (Lyrics and vocals by Bill Breitsprecher - iPod/Zune)

An instrumental version of this song was one of the first audio tracks I released on this podcast series four years ago. Sometimes I perform it with lyrics that I wrote. While many consider this a blend of blues and "spoken word," this is actually an old style - improvised lyrics that are stated, not sung. Recorded with bass, drums, I perform the guitar parts and wrote and sing the lyrics. On drums is "Wild Bill" Krupinski and "Catcus Joe" Leonard steps in on the bass. (January 9, 2010).
