| I have put these projects together to show students how the advanced features in MS Office are applied to create professional business documents. Students learn best when they see practical uses for learning. I emphasize creative graphics and strive to feature business themes that students show interest in. Each project has step-by-step instructions to get students started and to reinforce basic academic skills. Getting Started. Here is a "jump-start" to creative page layouts with MS Word. Word's Graphics. Now we're rolling and getting creative with Word. Spell Check. Grammar and spell checks are not enough. Jazz Dinner with Jack Grassel. My favorite jazz guitarist (my friend and one of my former guitar teachers) keeps his schedule posted at www.jackgrassel.com. We created a promotional flyer for one of his gigs. Chicago Style Pizza. Creating the Chicago skyline with MS Word's AutoShapes provides the starting point of this lesson in advertising layout. This is one of the most engaging lessons I have ever created -- students really had fun with it! Compu-World. Here is another drawing project. We use AutoShapes to create a computer store for an 8 1/2" x 11" advertising layout. Internet Diagram. Using AutoShapes and MS Word's drawing features, this project illustrates the basic infrastructure of the Internet. Play Bill. Creating advertisements is a great way to introduce and review graphics and page layouts. The Sound of Music was this year's musical, so a play bill was a natural for our talented business group. Vietnamese Street Cafe. I enjoyed learning about the heritage, culture and cuisine of the Hmong when I taught in a northern Wisconsin school district. To create this project, I worked with Yer Yang, Department Chair for English Language Learners. We celebrate diversity while learning advanced features of MS Word and page layout. Stockyard Steakhouse. He is a delicious combination of a history lesson and an authentic computer activity. Jen's Diner on Calumet. There is an interesting story behind this one, ask me and I will tell you. Now we are getting fancy with tabs and building compound tables with an authentic breakfast menu. Business Writing. Business writing is distinctly different than academic writing. Here is a newsletter that integrates writing skills with advanced features of MS Word. Computer Times. This newsletter uses special symbols and other advanced features of MS Word. We have fun with both the Macs and PCs. Cartoons. What fun would a newspaper be without cartoons. Using MS Clip Art and AutoShapes, they are easy to create and FUN! |
