Every state has its historic
places and stories, but few can equal the story of Stockyard Steakhouse, the
oldest continuously operating restaurant in Oklahoma City. At the turn of the century, the Stockyards
City area was a beehive of activity.
Herds of cattle were driven to Oklahoma City in an unending stream to
satisfy the East's growing demand for beef. Founded on October 3, 1910, Stockyards City
was built to serve the nation as a primary source for meat processing and
packing. By 1915; Morris, Wilson, and
Armour all established huge packing facilities to slaughter the cattle, hogs,
and sheep which were transported first by cattle drive and later by railroad
and truck. By 1926, Stockyards City was
the home of two major meat processors and the area became known as
"Packing Town." During the
great economic boom of the 1920’s, Oklahoma City saw the birth of an American
Classic Steakhouse. |
